Chester Stop the War Coalition – for justice and peace
The situation in Afghanistan continues to deteriorate and the StWC feels it is important to maintain public pressure to end the war.
Letter to the press
The letter below is to be sent to the local press for publication in the second week in October, before the October 24th demonstration. We would like as many people as possible to sign it: a long list of signatories will give it added strength. If you wish your name to be added to the list please reply to this email, giving the name you wish to be added to the list, by the end of September
Sir
The war in Afghanistan goes from bad to worse. The number of British troops who have died - 213 to date - is now higher than those killed in 6 years in Iraq. No one keeps track of the number of Afghan dead but it numbers tens of thousands.
Many people supported the war when it began eight years ago, believing that it would improve conditions in Afghanistan. Instead corruption is rife, life expectancy is falling and women’s rights are worsening.
Nor is the war doing anything to combat terrorism. Indeed, as it spreads remorselessly into Pakistan, a nuclear state, it adds even greater dangers to everyone's security.
The majority of people in both Britain and Afghanistan want British troops to leave. Yet all the major political parties continue to support the war.
More troops or helicopters won’t help. The NATO forces are not losing because they don’t have the equipment but because they are occupying a country that does not want to be occupied.
If you agree with us, please join the campaign - which includes the families of many serving British forces - to demand that British troops are withdrawn, swiftly, from Afghanistan. There is a national demonstration in London on October 24th which we ask everyone who can to attend.

Chester Stop the War Coalition – for justice and peace National Demonstration London 24 October - Troops Home Now!
Assemble 12 noon Hyde Park March to Trafalgar Square The march will be led by anti-war military families, army veterans and soldiers.
WHAT STOP THE WAR DOES CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
The national Troops Out of Afghanistan demonstration on
Saturday 24 October could not have been more timely, with
Gordon Brown rumoured to be ready to send up to 2000 more
troops, pending Barack Obama's likely decision to agree a
second US troop surge, and the BBC reporting another increase
in anti war opinion in Britain.
If you can manage to get to London to support the demo, please go.
We haven’t been able to run a coach from Chester or North Wales, but the following are running:
Coach from Liverpool – contact News for Nowhere 0151 708 7270
Coaches from Manchester – contact Jacqui on 01612738283
Some of us are going by train, on the 9.35 from Chester, returning on the 18.10. Let us know if you’re going too and we’ll look out for each other on the station.
It’s also possible and cheaper to go by coach – National Express has coaches going down either at 12.30 on the overnight, arriving at 6.20, or at 8.30 but this doesn’t get in until 1.30 – time to go to the rally but not the march. There’s a return at 17.00.
See you there!
Ps - For those of you who signed the letter to the press – it was sent last week for inclusion this week, so check the local papers!
